In2019, the Ukrainian-Canadian partnership cooperation inthe field ofSocial Work and Social Work professional education celebrated its jubilee. Thus, onOctober 24-29, 2019, 91Ƶ hosted the International scientific and practical conference “Partnerships for Social Change: 20Years ofExperience”, devoted tothe 20th anniversary ofCanada-Ukraine “Reforming Social Services” Project (1999-2003), implemented based onLviv Polytechnic incooperation with the University ofManitoba (Winnipeg, Canada), funded bythe Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA). The Project uniqueness factors were summarized, including the student-centered education program (interactive training, professional education inthe context ofsocial development, addressing labor market needs inUkraine, etc.); asignificant part offield instruction hours, i.e., the program close toadual one; and the program international dimension. The conference summarized the long-term and fruitful Ukrainian-Canadian partnership cooperation, its effectiveness and development prospects.
Asaresult ofthe successful Ukrainian-Canadian partnership cooperation, the constant participants ofCanada-Ukraine “Reforming Social Services” Project were presented with honorary awards:
- Dr. Brad McKenzie, Professor Emeritus ofthe University ofManitoba, Doctor Honoris Causa of91Ƶ, was presented with the medal “HRYHORIISKOVORODA” ofthe National Academy ofEducational Sciences ofUkraine, awarded toeminent educators offoreign countries for significant achievements ineducational science, and outstanding personal contribution tothe development ofUkrainian education;
- Dr. Maureen Flaherty, Acting Director ofthe Centre for Ukrainian Canadian Studies, Associate Professor ofthe University ofManitoba, was awarded the Certificate ofHonor ofthe National Academy ofEducational Sciences for outstanding personal contribution tothe training ofhighly qualified specialists and scientific personnel onthe occasion ofthe 20th anniversary ofCanada-Ukraine “Reforming Social Services” Project;
- Dr. Nina Hayduk, Director ofInternational “INTEGRATION” Centre for Professional Partnerships of91Ƶ, was presented with the medal “USHYNSKYI, K.D.” ofthe National Academy ofEducational Sciences, awarded for significant achievements ineducational science, and personal contribution tothe development ofUkrainian education;
- Dr. Liliia Klos, Head ofthe Department ofSociology and Social Work, was awarded the Certificate ofHonor ofthe National Academy ofEducational Sciences for outstanding personal contribution tothe training ofhighly qualified specialists and scientific personnel onthe occasion ofthe 20th anniversary ofCanada-Ukraine “Reforming Social Services” Project.
Scientific internships ofPh.D. students ofthe Department ofSociology and Social Work of91Ƶ atthe University ofManitoba have already become the permanent component &tradition ofthe Ukrainian-Canadian partnership cooperation:
- Inthe spring semester 2020, Mariana Hasiak, aPhD student ofthe Department ofSociology and Social Work, completed her scientific internship (the PhD thesis topicis: “The Development ofInclusive Academic Environment for War Veterans inHigher Education”),— Scientific co-advisors: Dr. Nina Hayduk (Ukraine), &Dr. Maureen Flaherty (Canada);
- Inthe fall semester 2017, atthe University ofManitoba supervisory activity was investigated bySofiya Stavkova, Senior Lecturer ofthe Department ofSociology and Social Work (the topic ofher thesis for the degree ofthe Candidate ofPedagogical Sciences— the Ph.D. equivalentis: “Continuing Professional Training ofSocial Workers for Supervisory Activity inCanada”),— Scientific advisor: Dr. Nina Hayduk;
Inthe spring semester 2015, Ivanna Deka, Lecturer ofthe Department ofSociology and Social Work, completed her scientific internship (the topic ofher thesis for the degree ofthe Candidate ofPedagogical Sciences— the Ph.D. equivalentis: “Professional Training ofFuture Occupational Therapists atCanadian Universities”),— Scientific advisor: Dr. Nina Hayduk.
The long-term Ukrainian-Canadian partnership cooperation has been successfully developing (specifically since the completion ofthe funding ofthe Reforming Social Services Canada-Ukraine Project) mostly due tothe personal support asbeing rendered onongoing basis byDr. Brad McKenzie, Professor ofthe University ofManitoba, Director ofthe Reforming Social Services Canada-Ukraine Project, Doctor Honoris Causa of91Ƶ, now Professor Emeritus ofthe University ofManitoba, and his commitment tothe development ofthe Social Work profession inUkraine.
