On November 26–27, 2025, Nataliia Horbal, Associate Professor at the Institute of Economics and Management, and Halyna Berehova, Nelia Pabyrivska and Olena Haiduchok, Associate Professors at the Institute of Applied Mathematics and Fundamental Sciences, represented Lviv Polytechnic at the conference of the international project Bright and Green Christmas in European towns – Building a Sustainable Future, funded by the European Union.
The project is aimed at implementing sustainable practices in organizing Christmas events and developing cooperation between European communities. Coordinated by the municipality of Waterford (Ireland), the event, held under the title European City of Christmas 2024, brought together more than one hundred representatives of municipalities, businesses, public organizations, educational institutions, and the media. Particular attention was given to energy-efficient festive lighting, waste reduction, and the use of environmentally friendly Christmas decorations.
Festive events, including Christmas, are usually associated with mass consumption – lights, decorations, crowds, traffic, purchasing goods and services. Without attention to ecology, this creates a significant impact on the environment. The initiative seeks to reduce this impact through the introduction of sustainable practices. This is consistent with broader European trends: energy efficiency, a green economy, waste reduction, supporting local producers and environmental responsibility.
Nataliia Horbal, Halyna Berehova, Nelia Pabyrivska and Olena Haiduchok are sincerely grateful to Waterford City & County Council for an interesting and fruitful event, as well as to all project partners for effective cooperation and support for Ukraine!
